ELENA OSTROVSKY SOPRANO
NEW OPERA | ART SONG | RUSSIAN ROMANCE | JAZZ | CABARET | SALON REVIVAL
Elena Ostrovsky is an internationally-acclaimed opera singer who recently began her public entrance into New Opera, Jazz, and Art Song circles. A Bel Canto Soprano, Elena Ostrovsky recently partnered with the international legend and Moscow-based pianist Levon Oganezov for a sold-out show in Manhattan. They presented a rare evening of music from the 1920s-1960s. The evening began Eastward, with a set of re-imagined Russian-Soviet classic popular repertoire selections, sung in Russian – reintroducing a time-honored style. Next, they faced West with American and European Jazz standards from the same era. Elena also gives many private concerts and features often in the Jazz and Cabaret scene; including a November 2023 performance at the prestigious Manhattan Museum of Jazz and a January 2024 solo concert featuring the luminary trumpeter Valery Pomonarev Quartet, also in Manhattan.
One of her boutique projects includes a unique New Opera song cycle as a co-composer and vocalist with Belarusian-born, New Jersey-based producer Boris Borovoy (AKA Amber Room). With the fiery Gothic temper of Dante's Inferno, the iron heft of Wagner, the volatility of Paganini, and the vocal demand of Verdi, she dives into a clandestine world. With original poetry by Alexander Galich (translated by Yelena Einhorn, edited by Alex Fefer). The prowess of her vocal line complements Borovoy’s Symphonic underscore. The series is an 'open architecture project'; working with selected authors, composers, poets, etc. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Zhenya Rock has been invited to contribute to the project.
Ms. Ostrovsky released her first contemporary album The Return in 2020. The project was Ms. Ostrovsky’s first foray into Jazz and Art Songs since her near-fatal accident in 2010, which almost rendered her voiceless. The album featured Ms. Ostrovsky’s interpretations, performed in both Russian and English, of several of the most treasured Russian Silver Age poetry, written by Marina Tsvetaeva, Anna Akhmatova, Konstantin Balmont, Sergey Esenin, Alexander Blok, Igor Severyanin, and set to brilliant romantic melodies by composer Zlata Razdolina. The Return was arranged, orchestrated and produced by Jetro Silva, whose credits include Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Patti LaBelle, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few. Pavel Antonov served as art director for her album pre-release concert. Elena hosted a special-invitation virtual release party via ZOOM, which welcomed guests from New York, Moscow, Los Angeles, and Israel. In addition to appearances by those who were directly involved with the album (Zlata Razdolina, Jetro Silva, Vladimir Alexandrov, and Antonio Watts) the event drew visitors from prestigious, high profile performance, media, and radio outlets from Moscow and Israel. Her guests included Dmitry Vdovin and Olga Kopanina (The Bolshoi Theater), Yossi Tavor (Radio Orpheus, Moscow), Alexander Pokidchenko, Pavel Antonov and Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, who each offered high commendations for the album and lauded Elena’s extraordinary performance.
More about Elena Ostrovsky
World-renowned vocalist Elena Ostrovsky began her operatic career in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she graduated from the Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory. She also performed and worked with Liya Mogilevskaya; the principal vocal coach and pianist for Bolshoi Theater - Russia’s leading opera house. After moving to the United States, Elena studied under great maestros Francisco Iglesias and Richard Barrett and performed at some of the most prestigious American opera venues. She made her major American debut in Francesca da Rimini (Rachmaninoff) at Carnegie Hall. Later, she performed at Lincoln Center’s Merkin Hall and Avery Fisher Hall.
Ms. Ostrovsky sang on recital tours in Canada, France, Austria, Italy, Poland, Hungary, and Taiwan. She participated in the Monterrey, Mexico opera gala Voice and Light. Her live performance at world famous St. Petersburg festival White Nights was released as her first album. In 2004, Elena recorded an album with Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Peter Schmelzer with Artistic Director Maestro Franco Iglesias.
In 2010, her radiant opera career came to a halt when she suffered a tragic accident which left her comatosed and experiencing multiple bouts of organ failure. Doctors were not confident about her viability, even if she were to survive. But with tremendous advocacy by her husband Igor, a doctor himself, Ms. Ostrovsky was able to make a remarkable and truly miraculous recovery - against all odds.
The ordeal, which involved extended intubation for artificial respiration, left her with significant damage to her vocal cords. Ms. Ostrovsky feared her singing career had come to a permanent close. However, her passion, perseverance, and dedication demanded that she continue to try. After rigorous vocal and physical therapy, Ms. Ostrovsky regained her voice - albeit a new one - which she explored with enthusiasm and joy. Ms. Ostrovsky has made a foray into the world of more contemporary music; mainly American Songbook and Jazz Standards and newly imagined art songs based on Silver Age Russian poetry and the works of Zlata Razdolina. She made her non-operatic debut in Manhattan in May of 2019 at Scandinavia House to a full audience and rave reviews.
In 2020, Ms. Ostrovsky released her album The Return, drawing from the richness of her life experiences. The album is being produced and arranged by internationally acclaimed producer, arranger, and pianist Jetro Silva who has worked with a platinum cast of top-tier recording artists including Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, and many others. Her modern classical single Love & Fate was released in December 2020. In addition to her own career, Ms. Ostrovsky dedicates herself to the education and support of aspiring young opera singers. In that capacity, she has participated in several auditions, festivals, and workshops in Russia, Italy, Georgia, Latvia, South Korea, & the United States. She is working on a haunting New Opera song cycle with Boris Borovoy.

HAVE YOU SEEN ELENA'S SHOW?
WE INVITE YOU TO
“Vocalist Elena Ostrovsky teamed up with a seasoned Jazz quintet to deliver a fun mix of Russian Romance, American Songbook, and Broadway/Cabaret. Elena has terrific and charming charisma and with that, she commands the stage.
The audience really loved her. She was warm, personable, and chose her selections with great taste.
Her voice is crystal clear and feminine. There is a sense of Ella Fitzgerald in her. In fact, her duets with guest vocalist Arkady Mangeim were reminiscent of Louie and Ella in their sweetness. The evening also featured the Tango dance couple Iakof Shonskey and Ninah Beliavsky who were majestic.
Elena Ostrovsky really swings. The show was uplifting; full of humor and style. She became your host in a wonderful party… and her HATS!
I've worked with some of the most riveting, dynamic female personas in the world, and I recognize the "what it takes" confidence and charisma when I see it. Elena has it!”
